Title : A Brown And Black Eggshell-Ware Jar
Size : Height 6 3/8in. 16.2cmProvenance : The Breitbart Collection (Sotheby's, New York, The Breitbart Collection of Ancient Glass, Egyptian, Western Asiatic and Classical Antiquities, June 20th, 1990, no. 2, illus.) Cf. Steffen Wenig, Africa in Antiquity: the Arts of Ancient Nubia and the Sudan, Brooklyn, 1978, vol. II, nos. 6 and 7. Such vessels are so delicate that it is generally believed they were not utilitarian, but were created as splendid objects of personal property meant to demonstrate the wealth of their owners (see David B. O'Connor, Ancient Nubia: Egypt's Rival in Africa, Philadelphia, 1993, pl. 1). Alternatively, it has been suggested that their use was funerary (see Africa: the Art of a Continent, Tom Phillips, ed., Munich, 1995, p. 106).Sotheby's, auctioneer, New York, US
