Description : West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, 20th century CE. A fantastic, brightly colored example of a hand-carved wooden Epa mask, a ceremonial mask worn by the Yoruba during the Epa masquerade. These masks are used to represent important roles in the community, like farmers, kings, mothers, and priests. They are also used the honor the ancestors who would have performed those roles in the past. Epa masks are always carved in the form of a head - the tkiko - a container for spiritual power - with the figure they are depicting atop it. In this case, the figure atop it is someone in a square litter with twin daggers or swords in sheaths attached to either side. Bright purple pigment gives this a very distinctive look.
