Description : Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand carved and hand painted mask depicting a female character created for use in a dance performance. The impressive visage presents a yellow ochre complexion with hand painted details in black, an elaborate black coiffure with a crest at the top, eye slits for the wearer, painted arched brows, painted stylized geometric motifs adorning cheeks, chin, forehead, and area between nose and mouth, a small protruding nose, and an open smile with incised teeth. Such masks were not meant to be isolated works of sculpture, but rather used in a mask performance that included music, costumes, food, and audience participation.
