Learn more at aqfoundation.org ** West Africa, Central Mali, Dogon peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A dynamic cast-brass sculpture of a warrior or elite figure upon a horse, rendered in a detailed and stylized manner. The horse rears up on his hind legs which are balanced on a ring base, and the body is adorned with an ornate bridle and breast collar, the back is incised to create a textured saddle blanket. The elite rider is cast separately - his legs delineated to straddle the horse's back upon a saddle complete with a back rest and saddle horn. This warrior figure wears an elaborate headdress, with full beard and holds a spear aloft in one arm. Horses and horse ownership symbolized status, wealth, and power for the Dogon people, and equestrian warriors were highly revered among the Dogon and artwork incorporating horses and riders were meant to depict powerful men, or mythological figures, such as the primordial spirits known as Nommo. Size: 11.3 L x 4.5 W x 12.75 H (28.7 cm x 11.4 cm x 32.4 cm), 13.625 H (34.6 cm) on included custom stand. Condition report : Rider is removable from horse's saddle. Both horse and rider have light abrasions and encrustations, with minimal softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout.
