This 1965 painting is a draft for an oil painting by Marjorie Wallace.
At that time Albie Sachs was subjected to a banning order which meant that he was prohibited from meeting with more than one person at a time. The painter Marjorie Wallace, a Scottish woman, was married to the poet Jan Rabie, who was friendly with other writers such as Breyton Breytenbach and Andre Brink. With the excuse that he was meeting with only the painter, Sachs was able to meet with a circle of friends hidden within the artist's house. To extend his access to his friends, Marjorie Wallace first prepared this preliminary painting before moving onto the final painting [...] entitled The Young Advocate (Portrait of Albie Sachs).
