Anmerkung : AGBOGBLOSHIE Agbogbloshie, on the outskirts of Accra in Ghana is the second largest e-waste processing area in West Africa. Home to an estimated 80 000 inhabitants, the impoverished settlement has become the resting place for huge volumes of electronic-waste. According to the UN Environment Program, Western countries produce approximately 50 million tons of digital waste each year. Much of this techno-trash ends up piled into containers, destined for developing countries. Shipped under the pretext of being reusable electronic goods, in reality, places like the Agbogbloshie dump are ultimately littered with unsalable items. The marginalised communities who inhabit the area known locally as ‘Sodom and Gomorrah’, survive by burning the electronics to extract valuable metals – effectively turning the site into a toxic wasteland. Pieter Hugo first saw photos of the landfill in National Geographic. The images persuaded him to take his own photos and the artist created the visually surreal series, ‘Permanent Error’ documenting this profoundly inhumane environment, during two trips of two weeks each.
