Anmerkung : Following his studies at UCT, Krige followed his brother Uys to Johannesburg in 1931:"He stepped off the train at Jo'burg Central with his hair over his eyes, his pyjamas in a paper bag and a set of canvases wrapped in blankets under his arm." (Fox 2000, p.25)Krige left Johannesburg for London in 1934. The present lot, an early work for the artist, demonstrates Krige's bold use of colour and his admiration for the Post Impressionists, and Cézanne in particular. It is a world away from the sombre war-time paintings of his second Johannesburg period (1938-1941).LITERATURE: J. Fox, The life and art of Francois Krige, (Vlaeberg, 2000)
