Anmerkung : A master printmaker and watercolourist, Alan Crump's work ranged from esoteric conceptual etchings to monumental large-scale landscape paintings of breathtaking beauty and technical dexterity. He studied fine art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town as well as the University of California in Los Angeles and the New School in New York. He then went on to lecture at the University of South Africa for several years until he was appointed as the head of fine arts at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1980. In addition to teaching, mentoring, curating and publishing, he was influential in arts administration at various levels, worked with galleries and public and corporate collections, sat on acquisitions committees and advisory boards and shaped the Standard Bank National Arts Festival, Grahamstown, in a number of important ways. Students who came into his ambit during his years at the University of the Witwatersrand include such currently renowned artists as Jane Alexander, Deborah Bell, Kim Berman, Candice Breitz, Kendell Geers, Joachim Schönfeldt and Diane Victor.
