Beschreibung : West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A fine collection of a brass currency rings threaded on a leather cord with cowrie shells attached to the ends which could be worn as a belt. The 72 rings are cast via the lost wax method and incised with crosshatching lines then strung between knotted leather strips as a belt or necklace with 6 cowrie shells tied to the tassel ends. The rings were used as trade and currency pieces that could be worn as decorative status symbols of wealth.
