Das ist der Preis für die folgende Bewertung: Roman Inscribed Slingshot Collection, 2006

Beschreibung : 1st century BC-2nd century AD. A mixed group of lead slingshot missiles with low-relief inscriptions 'IMP' (IMPERATOR, 'victorious general'), 'CNM' (GNAEUS MAGNUS POMPEIUS'), '?P' (?), 'O?????' (?). See Mcaul G. 'On inscribed sling-bullets' in Canadian Journal for March, Toronto,1864, pp.1-11, Bishop, M. C., Coulston, J.C.N., Roman military equipment, from the Punic wars to the fall of Rome, London, 2006, Appels A., Laycock S., Roman buckles and military fittings, Witham, 2007, p.139, D'Amato, R., Arms and Armour of the Imperial Roman Soldier, London, 2009, F., Farka C., Gugl C., Humer F., Kremer, G., Pollhammer (ed.), Der Adler Roms, Carnuntum und die Armee der Caesaren, Bad Voslau, 2017, pp.290-291. 199 grams total, 31-43mm (1 1/4 - 1 3/4). From the private collection of Antony John Scammell (1937-2019), acquired on the UK art market from 1960-2000. The leaden bullets, which were thrown from slings, were called in Greek molúvdaivai, and in Latin glandes: the former indicating the material, 'lead', the latter, the shape , 'acorns'. The sling (funda) with its lead missiles (plumbea pondera) was used by special slingers (funditores), well illustrated on Trajan’s Column. They are dressed simply in broad tunics with no armour, but carry a shield. Their cloak or sagulum acted as an ammunition bag. Maybe these figures could be considered Balearic slingers, although we have not mention of cohortes funditorum (slingers) or libritorum (stone-throwers) coming from the Balearics (Baliarium) at this time. Antony John Scammell (1937-2019) was born, and lived his entire life, in the city of Bristol, England. Already from an early age he was enthralled by history and the heroes that it created. While serving overseas with the British Army, Antony began collecting coins and banknotes and this led to collecting a variety of different items throughout his life. From the early 1960s onward, Antony invested in acquiring ancient artefacts. Antony's vast collections started with Egyptian antiquities, but soon branched into Greek and Roman civilisations. The Roman civilisation fascinated him most and, when family commitments allowed, archaeological digs were coordinated in the west of England. These digs uncovered numerous artefacts, many of which were donated to local museums. In retirement, the collecting continued apace, branching into UK coins, British Empire banknotes and fossils. [4]
