Beschreibung : Ladi Kwali (Nigerian, c. 1925-1984) WATER JUG glazed stoneware h:16  w:9 d:9.50 in. Provenance: Abuja Pottery Studio, Abuja, Nigeria, c. 1970s, Private collection Ladi Kwali was a Gwari potter, who designed domestic and functional pots through traditional coiling, pinching and beating clay, distinctively decorated with figurative and geometric motifs - lizards, birds and insects. She joined the Abuja Pottery Training Centre in Nigeria, established in 1951 by Michael Cardew, where she developed techniques in the use of the potter's wheel, glazing and kiln firing. Ladi Kwali exhibited at Berkeley Galleries in London (1958 and 1962) and Galerie La Borne, Paris. She demonstrated Gwari pottery techniques during tours to Europe and America with Michael Cardew. She was made an MBE in 1963, received an honorary degree in 1977, and Nigerian National Merit Award for academic achievement. Her work is held in collections, including Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, USA, Victoria and Albert Museum, and Aberystwyth University Ceramics Gallery, UK. Her work was exhibited in 2015 at University for the Creative Arts, Farnham curated by Kenyan-born British studio potter Dame Magdalene Anyango Namakhiya Odundo.
