Anmerkung : THE PROPERTY OF A DUTCH DISTINGUISHED FAMILYCarlo Bugatti (1856 - 1940) studied architecture in Milan in 1875 and moved to Paris to finish his degree at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1880 he returned to Milan and made his first recorded set of furniture, a bedroom suite which was to be a wedding present to his sister Luigia (Bice) and her future husband Giovanni Segantini. He first used parchment within his designs at the 1888 Italian Exhibition at Earl's Court, London, where he was awarded an honorary mention, and the nine drawings which accompanied his exhibits show the style for which he was to become famous was already formulated. Perhaps as a result of his architectural background he took inspiration from the Minarets and Moorish palaces of the Arab world, the Aztec pediments of South America, the light structures of the Japanese tea houses and African tribal art. An array of dentils, tassels, fringes, arcs, inlay and embossed metal mounts dazzled the viewer and created an exotic, almost theatrical, effect which was regarded with both confusion and condemnation alongside great excitment and acclaim. It is said that the Italian Queen, who saw Bugatti's contribution to the Italian Pavilion at the Turin Exhibition in 1902, described it as 'Moorish style', to which Bugatti replied: 'You are mistaken, your Majesty, this style is my own' (Dejean, p.25). Bugatti won the Diploma Speciale d'Onore for his contribution at the exhibition which was the highest award to be granted. Just two years later, in 1904, for unknown reasons Bugatti sold his workshop and reproducing rights to the Milanese furniture maker de Vecchi. He went on to focus on other disciplines in the art world, notably silver. His genius was passed to his two surviving sons, Ettore, creator of luxury motor cars, and Rembrandt, creator of animalier bronzes, both of whose works are also sought after around the world. (see P. Dejean, Carlo, Rembrandt, Eltore, Jean Bugatti, Paris, 1981)
