Das ist der Preis für die folgende Bewertung: Early 20Th C. Afreican Dan Gunyeya Mask

Beschreibung : West Africa, Ivory Coast into Liberia, Northern Dan, early 20th century or earlier. A stupendous Dan face mask, more specifically a Gunyaya mask, also called a racing mask, showing characteristic features such as pointed chin and large circular eyes. Perforations around periphery were intended for vegetal fibers. Traditionally, the wearer of such a mask was pursued by an unmasked runner. If and when captured, the unmasked runner donned the mask and was in turn pursued. The intention of these races was to train young men to fight. Winners received great recognition and praise. Today such races are more like games among the Dan. Finely carved with wonderful patina, not to mention great provenance. Size: 8 high. Provenance: Ex-private Pickard collection, from estate of Dr. William Ryse, art historian and curator of Detroit Museum of Art African collection, Curator of Children's Museum, collected 1930-1940s. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #101585
