Beschreibung : CANAANITE. Early Bronze Age, circa 3000-2300 BCE. Bronze 'epsilon' axe head. Of crescent form with three attachment points to haft, the terminals pierced for mounting, the bronze blade is 7.75 inches (19 cm) in length and 3.25 inches (8 cm)high, with a green patina and earthen encrustation. Two small ancient holes on bottom fin, two recent drill holes on central fin. From The Living Torah Museum Collection, ex Archaeological Center Auction no. 47 (Tel Aviv, 1 April 2010), lot 261. This type of axe, termed an epsilon due to its shape resembling the Greek letter, originated in ancient Egypt during the copper age (circa 5,000-3,000 BCE) and found wide popularity throughout the fertile crescent. It could have been used as a tool, a weapon, or sacrificial implement.
