Beschreibung : [ Antiquities ] A Serpentine Ushabti Of Neferhotep The 4TH Priest Of Amun 18TH Dynasty Reign Of Tuthmosis 111/AMENHOTEP 11 1479-1400 B.C. his forearms crossed on his chest and wearing a striated tripartite wig passing behind the large ears his finely carved face with full outlined lips rounded at the corners broad philtrum straight nose and large almond-shaped eyes with long contoured eyebrows and cosmetic lines the column of inscription in front translating "Revered Osiris Fourth Priest of Amun Neferhotep." Height 9 5/16in. 24.9cm Provenance French private collection acquired in the late 19th or early 20th Century then by descent to the present owner 94 Antiquities This ushabti appears to be the only one known of Neferhotep. Funerary cones bearing his name have come to light however in the western section of the Theban Necropolis suggesting the location of his tomb. These cones belong to three different types and can be found in the collections of the Egyptian Museum in Berlin and the Brooklyn Museum cf. Norman de Garis Davies and Miles Frederick Laming Macadam A Corpus of Inscribed Egyptian Funerary Cones Oxford 1957 vol. 1 nos. 301 302 and 359 Neferhotep is otherwise known through the inscriptions from the tomb of his brother Amenhotep son of Djehouty ( Theban Tomb no. 3451 cf. Urkunden der 18 Dynastie Kurt Sethe ed. Leipzig 1906- vol. Iv p. 106 5-8). Opinions vary as to exactly when Neferhotep was active. some favor the reigns of Tuthmosis 111 and Amenhotep 11 (cf. H. Kees Das Priestertum im Egyptischen Staat vom Neuen Reich bis zur Spitzeit Leiden 1953 p. 320 while others prefer the reign of Tuthmosis III alone (cf. Selke Susan Elchlr Die Verwaltung des "Hauses des Amunin der 18 Dynastie Hamburg 2000 pp. 296-297 no. 371 E60 000-90 000
