Titel : AN EGYPTIAN BLACK STEATITE FIGURE OF OSIRIS
Herkunft : Collected by Mrs Elias-Vaes between the late 1960s and the early 1970s.
Anmerkung : PROPERTY FROM THE PRIVATE COLLECTION OF THE LATE MRS ELIAS-VAES (1908-2002)SOLD IN AID OF THE FOUNDATION VAES-ELIASBorn into a wealthy Rotterdam family, Wilhemina Gerardina Vaes developed her taste for the many cultures of the world through her travels with her parents, including in Egypt. In 1930, she married Adrien Elias (1903-1963), who came from a Dutch noble family. Having no children, she focussed on collecting art following his death. Gradually her interests became multiple: paintings, books, clocks, sculpture, glass, arms and antiquities. In 1970, the size of her collection was such that a large proportion was exhibited in the Rotterdam Historical Museum under the name "Bezeten Bezit" (Obsessed Possesion), accompanied by an illustrated catalogue. In 1991, she opened the Kralings Museum where the collection was displayed into twenty themed rooms. In 1999, Mrs Elias-Vaes donated the collection to the Stichting Vaes-Elias. After her death in 2002, the foundation found it more and more difficult to survive independently and decided to offer this wonderful and varied collection at auction. As well as the following nine lots, a further selection of antiquities will be offered at Christie's Amsterdam, 27-29 April 2010 (see advert at back of catalogue). The proceeds of the sales will help establish a special fund to support the study of art and art history for young people. No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
