Beschreibung : Africa, Niger River Valley, Bura-Asinda-Sikka culture, ca. 3rd to 5th century CE. A hand-built terracotta head of abstract form with a flared base and a broad, ovoid neck. The raised face protrudes forward and features bulging eyes with slit-form pupils, a prominent nose with a bulbous nasal bridge, petite circular ears, a slender mouth, and a backswept coiffure of 5 braided cords. Many heads and figural effigies from this culture have been found buried upside-down in graves, and this example suggests it portrays the heavily stylized likeness of a deceased individual.
