Beschreibung : A beautiful Roman stucco mask of a woman, Egypt, c. 1st Century BC, wearing a wreath of reddish flowers, her hair styled in waves and ridges. Her features are beautifully modeled with large almond-shaped eyes and she wears elaborate earrings. This type of mask is an evolution from the Pharaonic period tradition of 'mummy' masks, often of wood, which acted as a substitute for head of the deceased. These heads were often idealized, rather than acting as a more realistic image of the deceased. This example is a very beautifu piece with much eye appeal, and retaining its vibrant colors.
