Beschreibung : West Africa, Mali, Bandiagara region, Dogon peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A finely carved wooden window shutter or small door used on houses or storage facilities such as granaries. The panel is a single piece with a pair of protruding knobs on one side as hinges. The front is low relief carved with a simple crocodile motif which represents ayo geu, a mythical black crocodile. Great patina and weathering to the surface from years of use and exposure to the elements!
