Beschreibung : **Originally Listed At $450** Western Africa, Mali, Dogon people, ca. early 20th century CE. An enigmatic, hand-carved wooden figure of a woman, standing nude and possibly pregnant, with her hands down at her sides and her legs bent slightly as if she is seated. Her face has round, incised eyes that may be a slightly later addition than the rest of the carved figure, her nose is long and thin, ending in flared, detailed nostrils. She has a jutting mouth with wide lips. Her torso is emphasized, below a very long neck, her legs, in contrast, are short and thin. The Dogon are well known for their masks and wooden figurative art. A figure like this one may represent an ancestor, whose worship is a major component of Dogon religion. Size: 3.85 W x 24.25 H (9.8 cm x 61.6 cm), 27.3 H (69.3 cm) on included custom stand.
